Boyer Recalls Dangerous Soap, Drain Products for Lack of Child-Resistant Packaging
Two children injured by lye and potassium hydroxide.
Friday, March 20, 2020 - The Boyer Corporation, based in LaGrange, Illinois, has recalled six brands of lye and potassium hydroxide, both used in soap-making and for cleaning drains, after reports that two children were burned by the products. The recalled brands are packaged in violation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) that mandates child-resistant packaging.
The products, sold on Amazon January 2015 through October 2019 for about $5, include Soap Supply Co. Lye, Soap Makers Lye, California Soap Supply, Combo Pure Solutions, Red Crown High Test Lye, and Boyer Potassium Hydroxide Flakes.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 329,000 packages of the recalled product have been sold in two-pound clear plastic bottles with continuous thread closure caps. Because the containers are not child-resistant, the products pose a risk of chemical burns and skin and eye irritation. One child reportedly suffered chemical burns to the mouth after accessing the product.
Lot numbers of the recalled products are located at the bottom of each jar, as well as on the side of the boxes they are packaged in. Lots range from 4001 to 9288.
The following products are included:
Soap Supply Co. Lye (yellow label) distributed by BigTProducts
Soap Makers Lye (green label) distributed by BigTProducts
California Soap Supply (dark blue label) distributed by NG Inc.
Combo Pure Solutions (light blue label) distributed by NG Inc.
Red Crown High Test Lye (red label) distributed by Boyer Corporation
Boyer Potassium Hydroxide Flakes (white label) distributed by Boyer Corporation
